Shakuntala Devi was a great Indian mathematician also known as human-computer. She was asked to multiply 13 digit randomly picked numbers and she gave answer within 28 seconds. This remarkable incidence added to the “Guinness book of records” in 1982. Apart from Mathematics, she was a good writer too. Her book “The world of Homosexuals” is the first book on Homosexuality in India.

Early Life

  • Shakuntala Devi was not able to complete her education because of her poor financial background. Her father worked in the circus as a trapeze artist.
  • At the age of 3, her father discovered her extraordinary skills in numbers. Then he started doing roadshows to showcase her skills in front of people.
  • She performed her arithmetic abilities at Mysore University at the age of 6.

Career Path

  • She stated to demonstrating her talent by doing foreign tours.
  • In 1988 professor Jensen gave her task to find out the cube root of 61,629,875 and the seventh root of 170,859,375. She gave the correct answer before they note down in the book.
  • She gave the 23rd root of a 201-digit number in 50 seconds, at Southern Methodist University.
  • At Imperial college of London she demonstrated the multiplication of two 13-digit numbers—7,686,369,774,870 Ă— 2,465,099,745,779. She correctly answered 18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730 in 28 seconds, isn’t that phenomenal. This was recorded in “Guiness Book of Record“, in 1982.

Relationship status

  • She married to Paritosh Banerji in 1960. They divorced in 1979 due to some personal problems.
  • She had one daughter Anupama Banerji.

Achievements and Awards

  • In 1969 she was awarded the title of the ‘Most Distinguished Woman of the Year‘ by the University of Philippines.
  • She received the ‘Ramanujan Mathematical Genius’ Award in Washington D.C in 1988.
  • She was honored with a Google Doodle for what would have been her 84th birthday on 4 November 2013.
